I Am Not Black, But I Have A Voice

February 23, 2018

I have a voice

I will speak up

I hope I can open the eyes of those who have them shut

I have a voice

I will use

So those in power will try not to abuse

I am not black

I am not equally oppressed as a person of a darker pigment than I

I don’t know the daily struggle

I wish I knew how it felt so I could better understand

What I do know is I have a voice

I can speak up as a person of privilege

I never saw myself as that

I do look white

I appear white and although a Latina

Appearances are how people judge us

My struggle has not been the same

I’ve endured a struggle for sure

But of a different nature

A woman, that’s another oppression in itself

To understand what people of color go through

Every day, simple things

work, home, store, neighborhood, daily interaction

I haven’t had the same experiences

But I have witnessed them and heard

I can only speak up

I can only speak up when an injustice needs to be exposed

It isn’t enough to hear about it

Those of us who don’t personally experience it

Need to speak up

I hope to understand anyone in a different space than I

Although I know I won’t I can try my best

Those who experience it

Don’t hate us who don’t

TEACH us

I have a voice

I will speak up

I hope I can open the eyes of those who have them shut

I have a voice

I will use

So those in power will try not to abuse
